How To Move Past People Pleasing

We have all felt the need to please. Whether it’s your boss, your spouse, a co-worker or friend, I’m sure you have felt the pressure of making people happy. And the truth is, unless you are pizza, you will never make everyone happy. But what is the problem with being a people-pleaser? Becoming obsessed with what people think about you is the fastest way to forget the way God actually designed you. When you spend your life trying to please others, you typically obsess over what people think of you. You will also be overly sensitive to criticism and you will have a hard time saying no. All of these things are what keep you from living the purposeful life God designed you to live. King Solomon, who ruled Israel from about 960 to 922 B.C., is considered one of the wisest leaders in history. He wrote a book in the Bible called Proverbs and gave great insight into the trap of people pleasing. He said, “Fearing people is a dangerous trap, but trusting the Lord means safety (Proverbs 29:25)

So how do we move past people pleasing? Here are three things that will help you live the life God designed for you.

  1. Keep margin in your life.
  2. Set healthy boundaries.
  3. Let others help you.

These simple practices are essential to your life and to helping you avoid being a people pleaser. Remember, you are greatly loved by God and He has a purpose for your life.
